OFFICE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
Director: Dr. Lucia Faccio
The Office of Biotechnology Transfer (OBT) established in 1992 by Fondazione Centro San Raffaele del Monte Tabor, is acting as the interface between the Foundation and the business community in the life science sector (pharma groups, biotech companies, food and cosmetic industries) as well as merchant banks and venture capitalists.

The mission of the Office of Biotechnology Transfer is to create value from know-how, intellectual property, human resources and research facilities available within San Raffaele, which includes the San Raffaele Hospital (the most renowned Italian hospital, with 1400 beds, around 250 clinical trials per year), the San Raffaele Scientific Institute (DIBIT), with around 793 researchers and 670 physicians scientist working at translational programs, 832 publications and an impact factor of 4624 in 2010.

The Office of Biotechnology Transfer is located within the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, in the eastern side of Milan, well connected to downtown via an internal underground metro station, to the motorway that surrounds the city, close to the Milan Linate International airport.

OFFICE OF BIOTECHNOGY TRANSFER MAIN ACTIVITIES

  • Scouting, evaluation, protection and management of Intellectual Property Rights.
  • Promotion of research results towards the life science w/w business community.
  • Negotiation and management of sponsored research projects.
  • Licensing of intellectual property rights and know how.
  • Support in the evaluation and creation of spin off  and joint venture in the life science sector.
  • Management of Material and Animal Transfer Agreements with industries.
  • Agreements, and Industrial Material Transfer Agreements.

SPONSORED RESEARCH AND INDUSTRIAL COLLABORATION AGREEMENTS

San Raffaele Scientific Institute gathers a wide range of talented and renowned scientists and clinicians devoted to basic, translational and pre-clinical/clinical research, of which pharma and biotech companies can benefit.
In fact, the presence on the same site of the research laboratories and of the hospital provides an integrated and appealing pipeline from bench to bedside and back.
The Institute is involved in a number of partnerships with pharma and biotech companies, with different focus:

- pre-clinical validation of company’s proprietary drugs on animal models and in vitro cell-systems
- sponsorship of specific research programs with the purpose of having a privileged access to patentable results
- strategic alliances on specific areas of excellence

Recent deals:

GSK, Fondazione Telethon and Fondazione San Raffaele to collaborate on gene therapy for rare diseases.

Merck Serono and San Raffaele Scientific Institute to Collaborate on Research in Neuroregenerative Diseases.
