DRI: Islet Processing Activity
Islet Processing Facility (IPF) of San Raffaele Scientific Institute was established as the Unit devoted to islet of Langerhans isolation from human pancreas. IPF mission is to provide isolated human islets for transplantation in type 1 diabetic patients as stated on the Italian organ and tissues transplant regulation. Islets available for transplantation means that they have been determined to meet all release specifications and to be suitable for utilization. At this purpose, IPF organized management with the target of ensuring that human islets have the quality required for transplantation in humans. Human islet preparations not suitable for transplant in patients can be used as a mean to drive the isolation procedures improvement, engraftment and its outcome, according to the local ethical committee decisions. Moreover the Milan Centre belongs to an European Consortium (ECIT) supported by JDRF, that distribute final islet preparation not suitable for transplant, with the aim to improve the research activities in diabetes.
