Tissue Engineering and Biomateriels

Many tissues of the musculoskeletal system are not capable of self-regeneration after injury, but they are only able to produce a reparative tissue having poor biomechanical properties. The aim of our studies is to develop tissue-engineered based strategies that allow for the regeneration of the damaged tissues. Currently, we are primarily studying the articular cartilage, the meniscus and the tendon. We are focusing on the development of an osteochondral composite for the treatment of the cartilaginous lesions. Different studies are also in progress for the treatment of meniscal lesions. In particular, we have demonstrated the potential of a cell-based therapy for the repair of the avascular region of the meniscus, and further studies are on their way for the pre-clinical and ultimately clinical application of this strategy. We are also working on the characterization of the meniscal cells and on the development of biological meniscal prostheses. Other studies in our group are also focusing on the reconstruction of tendon tissue, by the development of cellular scaffolds as suture reinforcement or tendon tissue substitution. Our group has an active collaboration with the University of Milan, with the Politecnico of Milan and the University of Salento.
